So, I went to a VERY cool event yesterday. General Motors came into town to promote their new crossover, Terrain. They hosted a few bloggers at auto dealership in downtown Miami for a very cool program. Since it was auto related, Dear Husband tagged along.

It was actually very nice. Brickell Motors has laid out a very nice breakfast spread for us. They also had wireless internet access, which allowed us to tweet and or/blog live from the event.

GM Diversity Communications Manager and her team really rolled out the red carpet. We first got to hear some scary stuff from 2 women with SafeKids. They talked about vehicle safety for children. Having 3 kids of my own, I thought I knew all there was about car seats and seat belts and the such. Come to find out, neither my children OR me have been traveling very safe. This is the season of holiday traveling. EVERYONE should go to their site to get critical info.

Then the very fabulous Lori Norwood spoke at length about trim on the Terrain. Lori is a creative designer for General Motors. I LOVE to see women doing it large!

Hugh Milne, GM Marketing Manager spoke next. He talked about all the features of this particular vehicle. I have to admit--I was impressed and so was my husband. I might add that it takes a LOT to impress the hubby on a car.

Finally, they announced that we would all have the opportunity to drive the vehicle. Carolyn pulled out a goodie bag and said that we would all get one before we left. She said that it contained swag from their partners, including an emergency blanket, a first aid kit, flares, etc. Then she said, "But, I want to give you all something out of the bag BEFORE you go outside to drive the cars. We realize you all are bloggers and you present things to your readers.." She then handed out "already charged" Sony Webbies, courtesy of Sony. Thanks Sony!

Of course, I had my Flip, but I was wayyy excited about the Webbie. It's a very cool little camera/video recorder. Of course, the Husband swiped it, almost immediately after it hit my hand. He thanked the folks profusely. I haven't seen it since.

Anywho, after the test drive, I was sold. It is truly a great car. And not expensive either. This just may be my next major purchase. If you need more info about it, let me know. I have a lot!

I was born with a very prominent Shopping Gene. Unfortunately, my DNA lacks the Money Gene. In it's place, I have the Poor Gene. The Poor Gene is dominant.

But despite this, I want some shoes. There is something very therapeutic for me about holding a bag that holds a box of brand new shoes in my size.

I plan to buy some shoes today. My husband is going to behead me. Lucky for you, he will probably leave my hands intact, so I will be able to continue to blog.

Sometimes, I don't make good decisions. I would even venture to say that a LOT of times, I don't make good decisions. Luckily, I have a husband that always sees things in an objective light, and is usually able to show me, without being condescending, the error of my ways.

Who helps you when you go way too far overboard? How do they reel you in? Do you fight them all the way?

Tell me about it. Be frank--you're among friends!

On Thursday night, I attended an uber fabulous jewelry trunk show at a local boutique. I covered it for Examiner.com. You can read that story here. But as usual, there's a story behind the story.

Yesterday, I got ready to write the story. I downloaded the pictures and video to my desktop. I logged into the publishing tool and started writing--and the computer CRASHED! It just rebooted itself. I was a bit taken aback, but okay fine--I guess I can live with that.

Windows came back up and just as I got to the Desktop, it rebooted itself again. I think this is where I started to panic a bit. But I tried to remain calm. The pattern started--Desktop/Reboot. After about 5 times, I remembered that I hadn't saved the video to the Flip.

I yelled for my husband. He is always so calm. He said, simply, "Let's take it in." I agreed. Within a half hour, we were in line at Geek Squad inside Best Buy. There a 19 year old genius announced that the computer wasn't working properly. Hmmph..as if I hadn't figured that out. I reminded him that I had stuff in my refrigerator older than him. He said that he thought it could be fixed, but wasn't sure if he could save my data. I walked away.

I walked right over to the new computers. They have all kinds there. Big ones, little ones, black ones, white ones, pink ones... If I wasn't such a brokeaholic, I would have bought a new one. But I am. So I didn't. Boy Genius says it should be ready by Tuesday. All I could think about was FOJ Denise's recent experience with Geek Squad...

Having just come off of a weekend road trip with my parents, I'm now preparing for another road trip in a couple weeks. This one will be over the course of 3 days, with the husband, the kids, and yes--Dad.

The weekend trip actually wasn't as bad as expected. Dad sat next to me and served as both the navigator and the passer of snacks. Mom sat in the back, but watched the speedometer like a hawk, reminding me of the speed limit and the possibility of a ticket. It wasn't anything new. We did have a great meal at Cracker Barrel, where Dad cheated on the little puzzle game that they have on the table and Mom checked out my Kindle.

I was prepared for it being insane and it wasn't. It worked out so well that I'm actually looking forward to the next one. This time, I plan to have the husband drive so I can capture all the fun on video. I'm excited.

What's with this new term, "cougar?" These are older women that go after younger men. We now call them cougars, huh? Well, I take offense. I am NOT a cougar.

No matter that I'm a few years older than my husband, and I often remind him that I already knew how to spell my name by the time he was born. And, no matter that I often dated younger men when I was single. I am NOT a cougar.

Why is cougar a derogatory term when older men have been stalking and preying on the youngest of women since the beginning of time? Why do women have to bear a stamp of shame? I am NOT a cougar.

I'm interested to see how you all feel about this. And in case you missed it--I am NOT a cougar!!

Please let me introduce FOJ(Friend of Jewel) Lori Karmel, owner of Fort Lauderdale's We Take the Cake. Lori was among the first people that I met when I moved to Fort Lauderdale, and I like to say that I met her BO (Before Oprah). You see, We Take the Cake's Key Lime bundt cake was featured as one of Oprah's favorite things in 2004. The endorsement revitalized her business and she's still riding the wave. Let me introduce you to the woman behind it all.

Lori's family moved to South Florida from Toronto in 2000. Her son was a toddler and she was a full time mother. She found We Take the Cake while searching through the yellow pages for a birthday cake for him. She was intrigued by their chocolate cream cheese frosting. Once her son started school, she started looking for a business to get into, found that We Take the Cake was up for sale, bought it, and the rest is history.

Her biggest challenge day to day is balancing staffing with production, since it's all custom. Her goal is to produce a premium, quality product, in and out, and that can be hard to do consistently. But Lori seems to be getting it right!

Her family and friends are her biggest supporters, her husband even came aboard to take care of the operations aspect, allowing Lori to concentrate on what she does best--sales and marketing. She absolutely loves getting notes and letters back from satisfied clients. She thinks that it's the most rewarding part of her business.

But it wasn't always easy. She was motivated by a book written by Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks. It described his extraordinary journey that took the company from his initial vision to the overwhelming success that it is today. She advises anyone looking to start up a new business that the most important part is marketing--

"Don't sit around waiting for business to come to you. Think outside the box to bring new business in. Forget about traditional advertising."

She's working on some new things for We Take the Cake. She's always looking to create new products. Client suggestions help drive new designs, flavors, and product offerings. In fact, she now has brownies on the menu, after landing a deal with the new W Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. She promises that the new Red Wine Reduction brownies will be a rich and fudgy hit! I can't wait to try them! You can contact Lori via email at sales@wetakethecake.com or by phone at 888-901-2253.

Ok, I just couldn't let this one slide. Today, July 27th, has been celebrated since the middle ages as "Natl Sleepy Head Day." On this day, the last person sleeping, in a household, is awaken by either being thrown in a lake or the sea, or having water thrown on him.

In one Finnish town, a local celebrity (usually a politician, writer, or businessman) is chosen to be thrown into the sea, as part of the celebration. No one know who it is until the ceremony. Crowds gather to watch.

Since I'm ALWAYS the FIRST person awake in my home, this is one that I would definitely LIKE to celebrate. Since my husband is usually the LAST person awake in my home, this is one that I will definitely NOT celebrate. Somehow, I don't think he would understand, especially since neither of us is Finnish. But, this is definitely someplace that I want to travel to, right around July 27th. I'm putting it on my bucket list now.

If this was celebrated in the United States, who would be likely to get wet, in your home? You? Spouse? Child? Pet?

This is my husband's birthday weekend. We are celebrating! Nothing big, but we are certain to have a ball! We don't have definite plans yet, but we'll figure something out.

My husband is the bestest! And if you know me at all, you know he would HAVE to be a saint to endure all these years with me. He's a hard worker, a great provider, and a true leader for our family. He's the son of Cuban immigrants, an ex-Marine(if there's any such thing), and a civil servant. He loves Batman, 80's music, and vehicles that go fast. He's also kind, generous, and loving. I'm not sure if I would be who I am, if he wasn't who he is. Happy birthday, Sweetie Pie!

Yesterday, the husband and I went to see Transformers 2. The show was at 4:30. We arrived at the mall at about 3:15, picked up our tickets, and walked the around for a little bit before we went back to the theater at about 4:00.

The theater was filling fast. We found seats. The next half hour was filled with "Is this seat taken? Is that seat taken? Can you move down one?" etc. What is the deal with that? How come you show up 5 mins before screening time with a party of 6 and are upset when 20 other folks won't shift their own seats around so that you and yours can sit together?

Or worse, why show up 10 mins late and want to keep striding back and forth in front of the screen? Is that right? Especially when the tickets were $14 each?

And finally, if you are sitting next to me and have popcorn and nachos and I have none, why get upset when I casually reach over and grab a handful?? I know that we don't know each other, but heck, we're spending 2 hours next to each other in the dark. There are married folks that don't spend that much darkness together. Give up the popcorn!!!

I want a dog. A teeny, cutesy dog-a teacup. One that I can carry and cuddle and enjoy. One that I can put pink bows on and name Pinky, even if it's a boy dog. But the Husband (who is the boss of me) says no. He won't even discuss it. It's a closed topic. He says I won't take care of it and he will end up having to do it. Fine, except HE has a dog.

A huge dog. One that goes through 50lb bags of dog food like they are nothing. How come he gets to have a dog and I don't? How does he know I won't take care of it--he hasn't even given me a chance?? And so what if he ends up taking care of it? Heck, how much more work could there be in feeding a second dog, when you already are feeding one? Besides, I have a son. He would help me with the dog, right? Right? Right?

One day a year, the good folks at Ben & Jerry's give away a free cone to anyone that comes in to one of their stores. It's part of showing gratitude to their customer base. I'm sure they hope to win new customers and it's good PR. Yesterday was that day. My husband and son went in to collect theirs and encountered a really rude employee. I'm sure she was inundated by the crowds, but at the same time, she should be glad to have a job in this economy. Right?

Let's move on to America Online. Several years back, executives at AOL decided that they would make their services free to anyone who already had internet access. Millions of subscribers quickly changed over. Here's the catch--if you are not a paying member, they don't provide any technical support. So, if their service happens to hit a kink, which it frequently does, they won't talk to you.

Finally, I've been hearing a lot lately about Acai berry scams. The Acai berry was touted to be the best thing since the birth control pill. It was supposed to be high in antioxidants and very good for your health--so good that they would give you a supply for free. The catch was--when you signed up for your free batch, you had to give your credit card number to continue to receive it after your free batch ran out. Unfortunately, most folks started getting charged long before they even received the free supply. Many had to actually cancel the credit card in order to stop the charges.

The moral of the story is--Sometimes it's better to pay for services and have recourse, than to be at the mercy of a freebie. What do you think? Any more examples?

So, in a classic example of My Plan vs God's Plan, here I lay in Memorial Hospital Miramar, watching CNN cover a highjacking at the Jamaican airport. As you recall, My Plan was to finalize vacation dates with Dad yesterday, followed by a long chat with my good friend Beth. Neither of those things got done, as neither was on God's Plan.

Instead, I woke up yesterday with my left foot wayyyy swollen. My dear husband took a look and shuttled me off to the ER. The doctor wanted both an ultrasound of the leg to rule out a blood clot, as well as blood work. I settled in to wait, with my Kindle.

The ultrasound was negative, but then the fun started. First, my ER nurse, Elizabeth, came over with a strange look on her face. She asked if I knew that my iron was low. I responded that I had been anemic all of my life. She retreated. Soon after, the doctor returned. He advised that my iron count was much too low to allow me to leave the hospital. He further indicated that one of the ways that my body tried to announce this condition, was by the swelling of the foot. I immediately went into Classic Jewel mode and burst into tears, hoping to gain sympathy from him, and ultimately gain my freedom. He pretended not to notice. How do u NOT notice buckets of alligator tears???? As soon as I realized that the waterworks had absolutely no affect on him, I shut them off, deciding to save them for someone more worthy of such a fine display of drama.

So, here I lay, 2 blood tranfusions and 2 bags of iron later. Yesterday was THE DAY, but not for the reasons that I thought. God truly has a way of reminding us that our plans don't necessarily coincide with His.

A couple times a year, my husband and I will get up early and drive 10 mins to the Atlantic Ocean to see the sunrise. It's a breathtaking sight-the sun rising out of the ocean, creating more colors across the sky than a Crayola box.

We usually sit there and talk about plans for the future. Most of the time, we are silent-just holding hands and each using the time for personal reflection.

It's amazing how insignificant one can feel in the face of the greatness of God. It is then that my faith is reaffirmed--if He can make the sun rise, he surely can deal with my minute issues.

A month ago, when this blog was in the planning stage, I needed help. I knew that I wanted to write a blog. I knew what I wanted to say. I was committed to daily writing. I just didn't know "how to blog." How did i set it up? Would it cost me money? Did I need hosting and all? Etc. Etc.

What did I do? I called my trusted FOJ, Marc, who I knew had a blog years ago. I've known Marc nearly 20 years. We've seen each other grow and change. But we've never been on a date. We've never done anything even remotely romantic. And there's nothing wrong with him, he's cute, he's smart, works hard, etc.

That started me thinking--I have MANY guy friends that I have that platonic thing with--Marc, Drake, Mooney, Kelly,et al. We hang out. We have deep, meaningful conversations. We know wayyy too much about each other's personal business. Yet, I still hear, often, that men and women can NOT be just friends. Am I an anomaly?

And another thing--IF I am an anomaly, then clearly my husband is as well. He has many friends of the opposite sex as well. In fact, many of them call him with their issues and problems, and he helps them figure it out. I don't mind at all. He is very good at solving things.

To me, a friend is a friend, no matter what gender, race, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation. True friendship is such a gem to find, why limit it to only folks of the same sex? Guy friends have given me different perspectives on things. Nobody better to help you interpret the actions of a guy than a guy, right?

There are those that say that there's always one person in the platonic relationship that really wants to be more than friends. Somehow I don't think so. I don't think any of my guy friends are hiding secret desires for me. Maybe my glasses are too rosy, but I just don't see it.

So..AM I an anomaly? Can men and women be "just friends?" Am I fooling myself? Do you have any friends of the opposite sex? Are you secretly harboring romantic feelings towards them? Please share.

Your comments, priceless!

You know how everybody's sitting around and an innocent side comment starts meaningful (and sometimes heated) dialogue? Then you find out that your opinion on the subject differs from most folks in the room. Has that ever happened to you?

Well for me, the topic where my opinion is nearly guaranteed to differ is marriage. Now before you start throwing canned tomatoes at me, please remember this is MY blog and I can write whatever I want. Refer to the paragraph above, in the dark pink box.

Anyhow, I know exactly what to say to start the eyes rolling and the necks swiveling. All i have to say is--"MY HUSBAND IS THE HEAD OF MY HOUSE". Those 8 words can set it off! Some women say to me, "You mean to tell me that he is the boss of you? Girlllllllllllll, I wouldn't EVER let a man run me. You must be crazy."

Now this is not to say that it's a dictatorship, but there simply can't be two bosses. There has to be someplace where the buck stops. And in my home, it stops with him. Again, I don't wish to imply that I don't have a voice. Anyone who knows me knows that I speak loud and clear. There is discussion of pros and cons, and sometimes we don't agree. A decision needs to be made and that decision rests with him. I completely trust that he will do what he thinks is best for the family. And sometimes, it's the wrong decision. In that case, we just back up and go another route.

And ya know what? I don't mind one bit. I've been the decision maker, the bread winner, the disciplinarian, etc. and it wasn't fun. I've relinquished all those roles to him and I can focus on other things. I don't miss them. I don't know how it works in your home, but this works wonderfully in ours.
