Have you ever seen a rail yard? A huge place where railroad tracks crisscross so much that you get dizzy looking at it. Do you know the kind of place that I mean?

Well, I'm convinced that I live in such a place. You see, I always plan my life path. I know where I am and I know where I'm going. I have the course plotted out. I even know where I will stop to rest. Unfortunately, in these moments of wisdom, I sometimes forget to consult with God on what HIS plan is. And because of that, He usually finds a place to switch me off my track and put me on His.

That then causes me panic because rather than get closer to MY destination, I seem to be going in a totally different direction. A NORMAL person would accept that this new way is God's plan and go with it. But me? NOPE. I continue to try to get back on MY track. And God continues to divert my train. And we do it over and over.

And another thing, when you are about to switch tracks, you are supposed to slow down. Except when you are God. I can be going full speed ahead. I have my lil engineers hat on and my dirty overalls. I'm hanging out of the locomotive, on my way to wherever. And then-BOOM! God doesn't even slow me down. He just takes the next off ramp. Umph. It really isn't fun.

I've decided that this year, I will NOT fight with God on where I'm going and what I'm going to do when I get there. So there will be no announcement of plans for this year and no declaration of goals. I will submit completely and let him map out the journey. You can find me in the dining car..

FOJ Tami recently talked to me about her vision board. She said she is on her 4th one! I had no idea what a vision board is/was. She explained it.

It's a visual roadmap for your goals. It's like a bucket list in pictures. Things you want to do, places you want to go, folks you want to meet. You get pictures and put them on a bulletin board. Some people even put large, colored checks or X's on the picture once the task is accomplished.

I kind of like this idea and I have the perfect place to hang it--right over my desk at home. That way, I can look at it everyday and when I'm torn with a decision, the vision board will probably help me determine what I should do, based on my goals. I think that after Beach Week is over, I will get started on it. Couldn't hurt, right?

Do any of you have vision boards? Does it work? If you don't have a vision board, how do you keep track of your goals and your progress towards them?

Please let me introduce Shelby M Hill, a professional relationship coach and also an FOJ (Friend of Jewel). He coaches women regarding dating, relationship and social barriers. Interesting work, huh?

After watching women in his life experience unfulfilled, volatile, and dysfunctional relationships, he decided that he wanted to educate women about men--in addition to educating them on loving and working on themselves, rather than expecting a man to do it for them. He's challenged with making his clients understand that by investing in themselves, they can change the outcome of their personal situations.

One of the things that I love about Shelby is his unconditional and unabashed adoration for his wife, British. His blog, called
My Life With My Wife, is a glimpse inside their relationship and never fails to make me smile. His honest accounts of those little "situations" that all marriages experience have given me great insight into the "husband's" point of view. He calls British his best friend, business partner, lover and confidante. When he even thinks of her, he beams--and I find it quite refreshing!

Shelby has extended an invitation to my readers to friend him on Facebook (Shelby M Hill), follow him on Twitter(@shelbymhill), comment on his blog, and visit his website. He also offers complimentary coaching sessions. Contact him via email at shelby@shelbymhill.com for more information.

I asked Shelby about his plans for the future and I wasn't surprised to find that they include writing books, hosting teleseminars and speaking engagements. And of course, British.

So, here's a sobering thought. Today, July 2nd, at precisely noon, 2009 will be exactly halfway over. By then, you should have completed at least half of your goals for this year. The biggest news stories of the year so far involve Obama, the economy, and the passing of Michael Jackson.

My personal headlines include blogging, illness, work woes, and the passing of 2 dear family members. I've fallen way off pace to make all of my 2009 goals, but I haven't given up. In fact, I'm reminded that my personal plan may not be God's plan for my life. Acceptance is key.

What about you? Are you on pace to complete those tasks and resolutions that you planned for this year? If you didn't, why not? And what will you do now--give up or regroup? Tell me about it.

Michelle O's commencement address over the weekend starting me thinking--What would I say to graduates if I were giving the keynote address? I think my message would be on the same vein as Michelle's--enjoy life, give back, and don't lose sight of what's important.

Enjoyment is key. Life is much too short and tomorrow is never promised, so live in the moment and see blessings in every circumstance. Don't forget those without whom you've couldn't have made it. Become that person to someone else. Know that being successful does not necessarily mean that you are wealthy. Don't get caught up in the pursuit of money and material things. Realize early that money has nothing to do with happiness. If it did, then Liz Taylor wouldn't have been married 32 times and Michael Jackson wouldnt have a rubber nose. Find things in life that make you happy--family, basketball, toy poodles, whatever! Find those things and enjoy. That's what it's all about!

Let me first say, I am NOT a Miley Cyrus fan. However, with that being said, she does have a new song out whose lyrics are about determination, persistence, and most importantly--accepting failure. I am at a point in my life right now where these lessons are timely for me. Sometimes I will not come out on top. Sometimes, though I've given it my best, I will fall short of the goal. In those times, I have to pick myself up, dust off my britches, and press on.

I'm not fond of Miley's voice, but the lyrics of "The Climb" hit home for me. Here is the chorus...

There's always going to be another mountain
I'm always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes I'm gonna to have to lose,
Ain't about how fast I get there,
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

She's right--it's not always about winning--sometimes it's about the lessons learned in "the climb." What do you think?

Yesterday, after dinner and homework, I challenged my son to a couple games of bowling via wii. From the start, it was evident that I am a far superior wii bowler. But, I also noticed him getting more and more frustrated with his own performance. It seemed that his ball would go straight and just before hitting the target, take a curve and divert off into the gutter.

It reminded me of some of my own experiences, where I had a goal in my crosshairs and thought it was certain that I would obtain it, only to end up off to the side, not even coming close. In those instances, and even in my son's case, it wasn't the preparation that doomed me. It was the follow-through. I'm generally very diligent on the front end, thinking things through, weighing all options, pondering all possible outcomes, but not taking control once the project was launched.

My son lined up properly, his aim was accurate, but once the ball left his hand, there was no follow through. He just dropped his hands limply and hoped for the best. That was so familiar to me. We worked for a few minutes on his posture and also control, especially once he released the ball. It made a world of difference. He actually beat me a couple games afterwards. I think we both learned something...

I've never seen the movie, "The Bucket List," but I do understand the concept of having a bucket list. It's a list of things that you would like to do/go before you "kick the bucket."

I've never had this kind of list. Of course, during wishful thinking sessions, things would pop into mind, but I never took a step farther, and composed the actual list.

But now, realizing that it's very likely that I'm more than halfway finished the race, a bucket list is quite appealing. I plan to start working on it, first mentally, and then with an actual list.

Is this strange? Do you have one of these bucket lists? Do you measure your life against it periodically?
